Getting ready for the experience of a lifetime

In just five short days, I’ll be Madrid-bound–on a plane headed to the 11th international World Youth Day. I’m going to cover the event which runs from Aug. 16-21 for The Catholic Register, where I work as the Youth Editor of the Youth Speak News section. I’ll be blogging here throughout the experience, tweeting (see right or follow @V_Santilli) along with writing articles for YSN.

Some of my pilgrim essentials

Some of my pilgrim essentials: a yoga mat and emergency blanket for the overnight vigil at the Cuatro Vientos aerodome, a Spanish phrase book, the Canadian WYD jersey for pilgrims, batteries, a sun hat, sunglasses and a prayer book made by the Office of Catholic Youth for pilgrims on their trip (I'll be travelling with them).

As a twenty-something-year-old Catholic youth, I will be there to take it all in. As cliché as it may sound, I want to be completely open to the experience I’m about to enter into. And truth be told, I hope it is a truly life-changing experience.
